COMMON SENSE: - Ask questions!
- You usually get what you pay for. A few more dollars now my save you thousands in the future... and many headaches.
- Be confident in your contractor's abilities.
WHY DO YOU NEED A FENCE? - Security
- Pool, tennis court, backstop, batting cage, etc.
- Protect children or pets
- Provide privacy
- Reduce noise
- Add beauty to a home
- Prevent theft and loss
MATERIALS: - Not all materials are the same. Chain link fencing differs in size, diameter, wall thickness, gauge, and galvanizing method. Wood fencing can differ in size, grade and type of lummber, and method of construction. Decorative fencing can be wood, aluminum, wrought iron or PVC. When deciding on your fence contractor, be sure all material specifications are written on your proposal, to protect yourself. Ask to see material samples! A reputable fence contractor will be more than happy to show samples of the materials being used. Finally, ask the salesman to leave the samples with oyu and compare them to what is installed.
WHAT'S AVAILABLE? - Chain link
- Vinyl coated chain link
- Chain link with privacy slats
- Wood fencing
- PVC fencing
- Aluminum fencing
- Electric and solar gate systems
THE FENCE COMPANY CONTRACTOR: - An unbelieveable discount is just that... unbelieveable. Completely read the proposal left by the salesman. Is tax included? Is a permit included or is it even required? (It is not on many residential fences!). The old saying, "You get what you pay for" holds true. Reputable businesses of any type cannot continue to operate without making a profit. A professional contractor is entitled to a profit for a job well done.
A FEW SIMPLE GUIDELINES: - Ask for references and look at previous jobs.
- How long has the contractor been in business? Check to be sure.
- Does the contractor have a reputation for quality work? Be sure your contractor is fully covered with Workmen's Compensation Insurance and liability insurance. Ask for a copy of the company's insurance certificate to prove coverage. If an uninsured worker is injured on your property, the result could be disastrous and you may be held liable.
- Visit your fence company's place of business and ask for a tour. Is it neat? Is it well stocked? Does it look like a professional business or a fly-by-night operation?
YOUR CONTRACT - For your protection, be sure your contract is in writing on a letterhead or estimate form, check to see that all specifications are detailed and a drawing or layout of the project is attached. A price on the back of a business card is not the sign of a professional. A writtten contract protects the buyer and contractor and avoids misunderstandings.
FINALLY! - Your fence is a long term investment for your property and home. A new fence will either add or subtract to it's value. Use these guidelines to help make the best decision possible so that you are pleased with your new fence.
